How to Calculate Land Area at the Site?

The accurate measurement of the land area is one of the important steps in the construction project. Any kind of small mistakes in the measurement of the land area can lead to a big loss in the large budget loss on a construction project, and also can lead to design errors in the construction project. Numerous methods have been used in the calculation of the land area for the construction site, which are as follows:

Geometric method

In the case of calculating the land area for a small plot, the geometric method is ideal. This land area calculation method is one of the simplest methods and has been used most commonly. The geometric method relies on understanding the land’s shape and helps to take accurate field measurements. In this method, each side of the land has been measured carefully by using a measuring tape or chain, and the values have been recorded. After measuring the accurate shape, the correct area formula has been used to find the total surface of the construction site. This method helps to save time on the construction project.

For example, in the case of calculating the land area of the rectangular-shaped construction site, the land area = L * B, in which L denotes the length of the construction site, and B denotes the Breadth of the construction site.

Plain table survey method

Pain table surveying is another method of land area calculation, which helps to draw lines on the sheet to match the direction of the features on the ground.

In this method, while the table is properly oriented, each line on the paper runs in the same direction as the actual objects. This plain table survey method enables the surveyor to create a scaled drawing directly in the field by aligning the alidade with the real-world features. Thus, the surveyor can sketch the positions of the construction objects more accurately.

Graph paper method

In this type of land area calculation method, a grid of graph paper has been overlaid onto a map of the land and the full square inside the area has been calculated. After that, the number of partial areas needs to be measured, and it has to be added to the full squares. In the next step, the total number of squares needs to be multiplied by the area of each square represented on the ground to find out the total land area.

Using the GPS method

The land area can also be measured by using the GPS. This method helps to record the path in the field by using online tools, like Google Maps and helps to draw a boundary on the satellite image. In the case of the physical survey, a GPS land survey app needs to be downloaded, and then the surveyor has to walk the perimeter while the app tracks their path; it will calculate the land area for the surveyor.

In case of measuring the land area online, the surveyor has to open Google Maps or Google Earth and has to use the "Measure distance" tool. After that, the surveyor has to click along the border of the property to close the shape; thus, the land area will be displayed automatically.
