Types of Stairs & Staircase in Building Construction
Stairs are the most important component of the building structure, which are used to access various floors of the building. Stairs are made in different custom cable railings, glass railings or metal railings, which makes them different from each other.
Learn about Different Types of Stairs used in the Civil Engineering Projects
The stairs of the building structure can be designed in almost endless combinations of different types and forms, to fit into the spaces, function and aesthetics of the building structure. Different types of staircase designs provide different kinds of visual appeal and can take up varrng amounts of space in the building structure.
Some types of staircase designs are common in residential building structures, whereas other types of staircase designs are used in commercial or industrial buildings. The materials used in different staircase designs can affect the function, as well as the visual appearance of the staircases. The different types of stairs used in civil engineering projects are as follows:
Straight Stair
Straight stairs are the most common type of stair design, which features a single linear flight with no change in direction. The straight stairs have the simplest design, which is easy to build. The straight stair does not need any kind of special support, and it has been allowed for the easier installation of railings and handrails. The straight stair is also affordable and has been made more transparent than other types of stairs. These types of stairs tend to be easiest for a person to go up and down.
Quarter-turn Stairs
This type of stair has been commonly used in residential and commercial buildings. These types of stairs are visually appealing, as well as interesting, rather than the straight stairs. These types of stair takes less space than the straight stairs, as these stairs can be used in the corner of a room. The landing of this type of stair helps to provide a place to rest and helps to reduce the number of stairs one could fall down at a time.
Switchback Stairs
This type of stair is another form of straight stair, which features a 180-degree turn. This type of stair is U-shaped, and at the landing, it is located between the two parallel flights of stairs. These types of stairs have been used in office buildings.
Alternating Tread Stairs
In the case of the standard stairs, each foot normally uses about half of each tread, stepping out and over the unused section. Whereas, with the alternating tread stairs, the unused half tread has been removed to provide more tread depth.
Crossover Stairs
These types of stairs help to allow access over obstacles and obstructions. The crossover stairs have been commonly used in the insductrial applications and are ideal for accessing equipment and mezzanines.
Stair Towers
The stair towers have used in industrial applications. These types of stair design help to save time and money over custom-designed stair towers. These types of stairs are safer than ladders, as the side rails of these stairs help to provide fall protection. This stair also allows workers to carry tools and equipment more safely up the stairs.
Scissor Stairs
These types of stairs have been composed of two different flights of stairs, which helps to provide two separate paths of climbing or descending located within one stairwell enclosure.
Winder Stairs
These types of stairs are similar to the quarter-turn stairs. This type of stair is continuous with pie-shaped or triangular steps at the corner transition.
Ladder Stairs
These types of stairs are very steep stairs, which have been used for tight spaces and small houses. These types of stairs are very space-efficient, which can be built in different styles, from looking literally like a ladder to more designed versions.
Curved Stairs
The curved stairs featured a continuous set of stairs, which is commonly used in or near an entryway in residences or commercial buildings.
Circular Stairs
These types of stairs appear to follow a circle with a single centre of curvature and a large radius.
Floating Stairs
These types of stairs have been used both in residential and commercial buildings, which helps to provide a modern look and open feeling. Floating stairs help to bring more visual interest and spaciousness to any room.
Spiral Stairs
These types of stairs have a very compact design, which has one central post to which all steps are attached.
Bifurcated Stairs
These types of stairs have been used in the entryway of a very upscale and roomy home, whihc have an iconic feature of the ship Titanic. It helps to provide a grand entryway, which helps to make an instant visual impression.
